Size: what half really means

HEIC stores its image data with HEVC (H.265), a codec standardized in 2013 by a joint team of MPEG and the ITU-T video experts. This is exactly why Apple flipped the switch. When iOS 11 shipped in September 2017, HEIC became the default camera format on iPhone: identical-looking photos, half the space, on devices where storage upgrades cost real money. Size is only half the story. JPG is locked to 8 bits per color channel, a limit that was generous in 1992 and feels tight today. This is not just a phone story. Professional bodies such as the Canon EOS R5, Sony a7 IV, Nikon Z9 and Fujifilm X-T5 can record HEIF stills, usually as 10-bit HDR files, precisely because 8-bit JPG cannot hold everything their sensors capture.
JPG also has a quality quirk worth knowing: generation loss. Its lossy compression is re-applied on every save, so a JPG that gets edited and re-saved repeatedly degrades a little each time. HEIC sidesteps part of this problem with non-destructive editing: crops and 90-degree rotations can be stored as instructions inside the container instead of being baked into the pixels.
Compatibility: where JPG still rules
Now for the other side of the ledger. As of late 2025, Safari is the only major browser that displays HEIC natively. Chrome, Firefox and Edge do not, largely because HEVC decoding carries patent royalties that browser vendors refuse to take on. JPG, by contrast, has rendered in every browser since the 1990s and always will.
Windows tells a similar story. Windows 10 needs two Microsoft Store add-ons to open HEIC: the free "HEIF Image Extensions" plus "HEVC Video Extensions", which usually costs about $0.99. Windows 11 22H2 and later ship HEIF support built in, though HEVC decoding can still depend on the device. Editing software is patchy too: Photoshop opens 8-bit HEIC files but cannot save the format, GIMP has handled it since version 2.10.2 in May 2018, Discord does not support it at all, and many web forms, CMSes and online marketplaces simply reject .heic uploads.
During the remote AP exams in 2020, students who photographed their handwritten answers with iPhones had submissions fail because the College Board's upload system did not accept HEIC files. Format compatibility is not an abstract concern; it can cost you an exam.
