HEIF, HEIC and HIF: what the extensions mean
HEIF is the standard: the High Efficiency Image File Format, published by MPEG in 2015. It is a container that can hold one or many images, thumbnails and metadata. HEIC is what Apple calls a HEIF file whose images are compressed with the HEVC video codec, and it is the flavor every iPhone has produced since iOS 11. HIF is simply the extension Canon, Sony and Fujifilm chose for the HEIF files their cameras write.
In practice the three extensions describe the same kind of file, and they cause the same problem: Windows PCs, most browsers, many web forms and older apps refuse to open them. Where HEIF files come from
iPhone and iPad. The default camera format since 2017 (Settings, Camera, Formats, High Efficiency). Files use the .heic extension.
Samsung and other Android phones. Galaxy phones can save HEIF when the high efficiency pictures option is switched on; the files carry .heic or .heif.
Mirrorless cameras. Recent Canon, Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm bodies offer HEIF as a 10 bit alternative to JPG, usually with the .hif extension. These files keep more tonal range than JPG but open in even fewer programs than iPhone photos do.
Screenshots, scans and exports. macOS and some apps can export HEIF directly. The result is a .heif or .heic file that behaves exactly like the others.

What happens to camera HEIF files with 10 bit color
Camera HEIF files often store 10 bits per color channel, which is more than JPG can hold. The converter decodes the full image and writes a standard 8 bit JPG at quality 92, the level where photographs stop showing visible compression artifacts. For viewing, sharing and printing the difference is invisible; if you plan heavy exposure edits, keep the HEIF or the RAW file and edit that instead.
Everything else carries over: full resolution, EXIF data such as capture time, camera model, lens and exposure, and the orientation flag, which is applied to the pixels so the JPG sits upright in every viewer. HDR gain maps and depth data have no place in a JPG and are left out. The file name is kept with only the extension changed.
