What Is a HEIC File, and Why Convert It to JPG?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format every iPhone has used by default since iOS 11 in 2017. It compresses images with the HEVC codec, so a HEIC photo is roughly half the size of the same shot saved as JPG at the same visual quality, and it can hold Live Photos, bursts and portrait depth maps. JPG (JPEG) is older, larger and technically simpler, but it opens on every device, browser, printer and web form ever made. That is the whole reason to convert: keep the space saving HEIC originals on your phone, and hand out JPG copies whenever a photo has to leave the Apple ecosystem. How to Batch Convert HEIC to JPG

How to Make Your iPhone Shoot JPG Instead of HEIC
If you'd rather skip converting altogether, you can tell your iPhone to take photos as JPG in the first place.
Change the camera format
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible. From then on, new photos are saved as JPG and videos as H.264. Existing HEIC photos stay HEIC; this setting only affects what you shoot next. The trade off: JPG photos take roughly twice the storage of HEIC.
Convert automatically when transferring
Alternatively, keep shooting HEIC and let the iPhone convert during transfer: under Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC, choose Automatic. When you copy photos to a computer over USB, they arrive as JPG. (Keep Originals hands over the HEIC files untouched.) Most messaging apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, email) also convert HEIC to JPG on their own when you share a photo.
Why Won't Windows Open HEIC Files (and How to Fix It)
Out of the box, Windows 10 and 11 can't display HEIC photos. Microsoft ships the support as two separate Microsoft Store add ons: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions, the codec that actually decodes the image data, which usually costs money, though some PC manufacturers prelicense it.
Even with both extensions installed, the pain doesn't fully go away: plenty of web forms, older versions of Photoshop, print services and marketplace uploaders still refuse .heic files. Converting to JPG fixes all of it at once, because the file opens natively on every Windows PC ever made and uploads anywhere. Drop your photos into the converter above and you're done.
What Happens to Your Files
Your photos are yours. Here's exactly how this service treats them: converted files are stored for 30 days so you can come back for a download later or grab it on another device, and then they're deleted automatically, with no action needed from you. What the converter keeps, and what it leaves behind
A conversion is never a pure copy, so here is exactly what arrives in your JPG. None of this is a setting you need to touch. It is simply what happens to every file.

When a file will not go through
The converter turns a file away for one of a few reasons, and every message means something specific. Here is what each one is telling you.
The extension decides this one. Photos that already travelled through WhatsApp, Messenger or email usually arrive as JPG, so they need no conversion at all. Apple ProRAW shots are DNG files and belong in a raw editor instead.
Every upload is checked against the first bytes of the file, where the format records its brand, such as heic, heix or mif1. A file that fails that test is almost always a JPG or PNG renamed by hand, or a download that stopped halfway.
Forty megabytes per file is the ceiling. Ordinary iPhone photos sit far below it, usually between one and four megabytes, so this message normally points at a panorama, a long exposure or something that is not a phone photo at all.
A counter keeps automated scripts from draining the service. Normal use never comes close to it, and it resets every night.
Files are uploaded and converted one after another rather than all at once, which keeps slow connections alive. Every photo has its own progress bar, and the download buttons appear the moment the batch finishes.
Converted photos are deleted 30 days after they are made, and the download link dies with them. Convert the original once more and you get a fresh link.
