What Is a HEIC File? Format, History and How It Works
Every photo an iPhone has taken by default since 2017 lands in the camera roll as a .heic file, yet most people first hear the name when a website, an office PC or a photo kiosk refuses to open one. So what is HEIC? The short version: it is a modern image format that stores photos in files roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG, at the same visual quality. The long version involves an international standards group, a video codec, patent lawyers and a 1992 format that refuses to die.
This guide covers what a HEIC file is, how it works technically, where it came from, what it can store that JPG cannot, and why it still causes so much friction nearly a decade after Apple flipped the switch.
HEIC combines two technologies: the HEIF container (High Efficiency Image File Format, a flexible box for images and metadata) and HEVC compression (the video codec also known as H.265). Apple made it the default iPhone camera format in September 2017 with iOS 11. A HEIC photo is typically 40 to 50 percent smaller than the same photo saved as a JPG.
What is HEIC? The two-part answer
The name HEIC describes a specific combination of a container and a codec, and keeping the two apart explains almost everything odd about the format.
The outer layer is HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, standardized as ISO/IEC 23008-12. HEIF does not compress anything itself. It is a container: a structured file that can hold one image, many images, thumbnails, audio, metadata and editing instructions, all in a single package.
The inner layer is the codec that actually shrinks the pixels. When the images inside a HEIF container are compressed with HEVC (H.265), the file is branded HEIC and carries the .heic extension. That is the flavor Apple ships, and it is the one you will meet in practice.
The result beats JPG on pure math. JPEG's compression dates to 1992 and is built around the discrete cosine transform. HEVC arrived 21 years later with far smarter prediction, which is how HEIC hits the same visual quality in roughly half the bytes.
How HEIC works under the hood
HEVC is a video codec, and that is the key to HEIC's efficiency. Video codecs live or die by how well they compress, so they receive enormous engineering investment. HEVC was standardized in 2013 by JCT-VC, a joint team of MPEG and the ITU-T's video experts group, to squeeze 4K video through real-world bandwidth.
A video codec compresses two ways: by referencing neighboring frames (inter-frame coding) and by exploiting patterns inside a single frame (intra-frame coding). A photo has no neighboring frames, so a HEIC image is essentially one video frame compressed with HEVC's intra-frame toolkit. Smooth gradients, repeated textures and large uniform areas get predicted from surrounding pixels instead of being stored outright, and only the prediction errors are encoded.
The container side has an equally practical pedigree. HEIF is a special case of the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF, ISO/IEC 14496-12), first defined in 2001. That is the same structural blueprint MP4 video files use. Instead of one monolithic image stream, the file is a tree of typed boxes: one box holds the compressed image data, others hold Exif metadata, a thumbnail, a depth map or a burst sequence. Software can grab just the box it needs, which is why an iPhone can show a thumbnail grid without decoding thousands of full-size photos.
A short history of HEIC
HEIC feels like an Apple product, but Apple arrived late to the story. The format was developed inside MPEG, the ISO/IEC working group behind MP4 and HEVC, and the standard was finished two years before the iPhone touched it. Apple's timing was not arbitrary. Hardware HEVC encoding needs recent silicon, roughly the iPhone 7 era and newer, so by 2017 the installed base could handle the format without draining batteries on software encoding.
What a HEIC file can hold
JPG stores exactly one 8-bit image per file. A HEIC file is closer to a small photo database:
- Multiple images: bursts, image sequences and Apple Live Photos live in a single file instead of a folder of frames.
- Depth maps: the depth data behind portrait mode ships alongside the photo, so bokeh can be re-edited later.
- Transparency: an alpha channel, something JPG never supported.
- Deep color and HDR: up to 16-bit color depth, with 10-bit and 12-bit common in modern cameras, plus HDR in PQ or HLG. JPG is capped at 8 bits per channel.
- Non-destructive edits: crops, 90-degree rotations and overlays are stored as instructions in the container, so the original pixels survive.
- Thumbnails and metadata: embedded previews plus Exif and XMP data.
That capability list is why camera makers signed on. Canon's EOS R5, Sony's a1, Nikon's Z9 and Fujifilm's X-T5 all shoot 10-bit HDR stills in HEIF, something structurally impossible in a 1992-era JPG.
Why HEIC compatibility is still painful
If HEIC is so capable, why does half the internet still choke on it? One word: patents. The HEIF container itself is essentially royalty-free, but decoding HEVC carries patent royalties collected by multiple pools (MPEG LA and Access Advance among them). Any browser or OS vendor that ships an HEVC decoder owes money, and many simply refused.
The consequences show up everywhere:
- Browsers: as of late 2025, Safari is the only major browser that displays HEIC natively. Chrome, Firefox and Edge do not, largely because of HEVC licensing complexity.
- Windows: Windows 10 (version 1803 and later) needs two Microsoft Store add-ons: the free "HEIF Image Extensions" and the "HEVC Video Extensions", which usually costs about $0.99. Windows 11 22H2 and later ship HEIF support built in, though HEVC decoding still depends on the device.
- Web uploads: many web forms, CMSes and marketplaces flatly reject .heic files, and Discord does not support the format.
- Software: Photoshop reads HEIC (8-bit) but cannot save it; GIMP has read and exported it since version 2.10.2 in May 2018.
Apple papered over some gaps: iOS Mail converts HEIC to JPEG automatically when you email someone outside the Apple ecosystem, and Facebook converts uploads on its servers. During the remote AP exams in spring 2020, students who photographed their handwritten answers with iPhones had submissions fail because the College Board's upload system did not accept HEIC files. Time ran out while they hunted for a workaround, and it became one of the most public compatibility failures in the format's history.
You can tell your iPhone to shoot JPG instead: Settings > Camera > Formats > "Most Compatible" (HEIC is the "High Efficiency" option). And under Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC, the "Automatic" setting converts photos to JPG during a USB transfer, while "Keep Originals" hands over the HEIC files untouched.
HEIC, HEIF, HEIX: naming explained
The alphabet soup around this format trips up even technical users, so here is the decoder ring:
HEIF is the family name: the container standard itself. A HEIF file can hold images compressed with several different codecs; the standard also allows AVC, AV1, JPEG 2000, JPEG XR and JPEG XS payloads.
HEIC is the informal brand for HEIF files whose images are encoded with HEVC. Still images use the .heic extension, image sequences use .heics, and the MIME type is image/heic. This is what iPhones produce.
HEIX marks HEIF files encoded with HEVC's Main 10 profile, the 10-bit variant. Related brands HEIM and HEIS exist for other HEVC configurations. In everyday use, treat all of them as "HEIC with a different badge": the compatibility story is the same.
Worth knowing: the royalty problem that haunts HEIC pushed the industry toward designed-to-be-free rivals. AVIF (built on the AV1 codec) and JPEG XL follow the same modern-container idea without HEVC's patent baggage, and iOS 16 and later can display AVIF.
Should you keep HEIC or convert it?
On Apple hardware, HEIC is a quiet win: the same photos in half the space, with Live Photos and depth data intact. Keep it. The trouble starts when a photo needs to travel to a web form, an older Windows machine, a print shop or any of the countless systems that only speak JPG.
